3 12 2012

There have been many predictions of the end of the world (1988, 1992, 2000) and clearly, none of these dates have proven to be correct. However, 2012 is believed to be a definite end to our Earth. Wise men, fortune tellers, scientists etc. have preached this news due to the Mayan calendar finishing one of its great cycles on the 21st December, 2012 at the exact time of 11:11. On this date, it is alarming news that everything will be completely wiped out including the existence of the human race.

The end of the world will come in a series of cataclysmic events throughout the world. Unstoppable natural disasters such as Floods, tsunamis, bushfires, cyclones, unbelievably strong winds and unknown others will wipe out our Earth on the dreaded date arising quickly in December this year.

Unlike the other predicted dates, there are more precise answers as to why the end of the world will occur on the 21st December 2012. This date marks the conclusion of a b’ak’tun time period in the Mesoamerican Long count calendar which was used and associated with the Maya civilisation becoming known as the Mayan Calendar. This written and inscribed material of the long count calendar has survived from before the European conquest. This long count calendar was linear rather than cyclical and was kept roughly in units of 20 days made a unial, 18 unials (360 days) made a tun, 20 tuns made a k’atun and 20 k’atuns (144,000 days) made up a b’ak’tun. Therefore, bringing the end of the world to 21st December 2012.

This phenomenon has spread throughout the world, through the media, campaigns, public talk etc. More than 50,000 questions since 2007 have been posted on different websites asking about this date of the end of the world, they wonder whether they should kill themselves and children before this date comes to kill them. This spreading news has so far caused one suicide due to the fear of the world ending in the 2012 apocalypse.

However, amongst all the believers that are certain the world will end this year, there are millions of people that are not persuaded by the idea. These people plan to continue their everyday lives and not prepare at all for the date. On the other hand, the people that are ready for it are going out and making reckless decisions, spending all their money and some even achieving their bucket lists!! This group of people are constructing bunkers underground, in hope that they’ll survive.

No-one knows for sure if anything can save us, no-one knows for sure if this date will be another false prediction, but we can only prepare and wait for this date; 21st December 2012.

Muslim Murder

7 12 2009

A tragic and malicious murder has taken place in Germany with a pregnant woman, Marwa El-Sherbiny, stabbed brutally in front of her husband and three year old son, whilst she was also currently pregnant.

Sherbiny was in a German courtroom beginning trials for a man, Alex Wiens, who was appealing conviction for verbally abusing her while she was waiting for her son’s turn on the swing at a local park. He referred to her in vial terms such as an Islamist, terrorist and slut. Sherbiny’s courage and determination for justice against the racial hatred she was confronted with would not end in justice however, but rather devastation. It’s almost ironic that the woman was referred to stereotypically as the ‘terrorist’ yet the white Caucasian male from Germany is the one who has attempted the murder of two people.

At some point while Sherbiny and her family were present in the courtroom, Weins unexpectedly jumped her and attacked viciously without stopping and by the time he was intercepted he had already stabbed the woman some 16 consecutive times. There was no warning that this attack would be an outcome of his hearing.

Weins has been charged with her murder and the attempted murder of her husband who stepped in to defend his wife, the mother of his close-by three year old son and the child growing inside of her. He appeared in court recently to testify against her behind bullet proof glass, however that thick slate of glass would not protect him from his internal beating and battering and the great loss him and his family are suffering. The damage done to this family especially a now traumatized and mother dependant three year old son are catastrophic and unfathomable.

The German foreign minister has released this statement, “This shows that violence, racial hatred and intolerance have no place in Germany,” in regard to the life in prison sentencing of Alex Weins.

Naturally this kind of event, has initiated an uproar in the Muslim community especially because Weins has still shown no regret for his heinous crime and admits he has anti-Islamic and xenophobic views but says the motive for is attack was external to that and was mainly fueled by his fear of his upcoming trial. The shock, anguish and possible resentment enthralling passionate Muslims and anti racist activists alike is immense, this is also due to the fact that Germany has the second largest Muslim population in Western Europe. Other residing Muslims’ safety, security and feelings of welcome and respect are possibly jeopardized and it seems no matter what people say, do, proclaim and expect when it comes to racial issues and dispute, there will always be that one person with the opposite view. So while the German government in this current affair and governments around the world in the many racial affairs to come in the future, can release as many ethically sound and admirable statements as they want on how their country feels, acts and thinks…but the bad seed with the knife and the discriminatory views always seems to make the bolder statement.

Australia; friend or foe to the helpless?

9 11 2009

The issue of asylum seekers and more importantly the way they are dealt with is one of constant controversy and judgement. The issue re-emerged recently when a vessel holding about 10 women and children and a group of male asylum seekers from Sri Lanka, was found in international waters some weeks ago.

The ship was spotted by Australian foreign relations officials first, and ‘rescued’. This rescuing however entailed Australia transporting the ship to Indonesian ports as the boat was originally in the Indonesian pick up zone or region of the waters. The Indonesians refuse to disembark from the boat in any of the ports attempted in Indonesia, as they were originally headed to Australia knowing that they would be processed and have a more probable chance at freedom. Indonesian foreign officials have claimed they do not have the power to force the refugees to disembark the ship as it is ‘An Australian flagged vessel’.

There is no doubt that once off the boat and on the shores in Indonesia there would be nothing to stop Indonesian Government from placing the asylum seekers in a detention centre without much of a hope of ever joining society or attaining a ‘peaceful’ home, which is the reason they were on this venture in the first place.  The intercepting of this vessel, The Oceanic Viking, invites questioning of Mr Rudd’s capabilities in dealing with refugees and the admission of them into Australia. With their allowance or security clearance to be in Indonesian ports running out in 1 day, after already being extended, it has been said that it is very likely the ship be redirected to Australia.

It is the opinion of some that previous Prime Minister John Howard handled the asylum seekers much more effectively, with less illegal immigrants, and on shore asylum seekers being permitted into the country. In the time of John Howard’s governing there were many less asylum seekers arriving on our shores. When he was dealing with the issue of refugees, genuine or in genuine, the issue was far less dense and he was far less concerned with justice and humane obligation in his decision making. With asylum seeking much more evident now, Mr. Rudd has much more on his plate and a lot more people watching.

It brings up an interesting issue of which sort of approach is best in these difficult situations. An inhumane, but safe and secure method will keep the Asylum seekers out of country and off our streets, but hopefully not out of our government’s conscience. Asylum seekers, or a boat full of asylum seekers, are still people, people who need protection and life just as much as the rest of us. I’m not dismissing the processing required. Obviously in light of the world we live in; we can see that we need to assess everyone who enters our country for the safety of the country and its people. But to what extent? How much is too much? What we need to remember is it is often not the fault of the Asylum seekers in question that they are in the position they are in.

One day, a million years in the future, Australia could be just like the dangerous, unliveable countries these people flee from, and we could be the ones seeking peaceful welcoming countries. So before we shut the door, or in this case push the ship the other way, we should put on the shoes of these struggling individuals and think. Think before we act, think before we speak, think before we judge and think before we condemn how somebody has decided to handle this delicate issue.

The World’s Most Expensive Laaaamb

Seven-month old Deveronvale Perfection will never have to worry about ending up as lamb chops, after being sold for a record breaking $445, 500!

A British farmer forked out the average house price in Sydney for The Texel Tup affectionately known as Deveronvale Perfection.

The seven-month old pedigree lamb was bred by Graham Morrison and bought by Fraserburgh farmer, Jimmy Douglas.

Experts believe that the sale price was an excellent investment on Douglas’ behalf and a very reasonable price, even if it did take some people by the surprise.

John Yates, who is the current Texel Sheep Society, said that the ram is expected to father pedigree lambs that will earn his new owner millions of dollars. He claims that “High prices are no surprise as this sort of prestigious event.”

Yates also said that “A lot of people see these animals as lamb chops, but a lot of effort and dedication goes into developing these flocks which are at the top of the genetic pile.”

He also says that the previous UK record holder earned around 2 million dollars after paying almost $250 000 for his Texel.

The previous record price for a sheep was set in Australia in 1989, when close $400 000 was paid for a Merino.

Earthquake in Indonesia

31 08 2009

Seven people were injured recently as an earthquake in Indonesia’s Western Sumatra struck without warning.  On Sunday August 16 at 2:38pm a sea quake centred in the Indian Ocean sent “locals running out of their houses in panic,” stated a local official.

The Earthquake came as a surprise to many people living in the Mentawai Islands at the time as no warning was sounded.  “We’ll only issue a warning if the magnitude is greater than seven,” Suharjono stated, the technical chief of geophysics. The Seaquake in Western Sumatra registered at 6.9 just one point below the necessary seven.

Chief Jasmarizal of West Sumatra provincial health crisis centre reported on the injuries. “Five people were injured when an escalator at a mall in north Padang collapsed. Two others were hurt when the fences of their homes gave way. They had light injuries like abrasions on their arms and legs,” he said.

Indonesia is positioned at the joint of two large tectonic plates making a highly vulnerable to similar incidents.
