She’s a female and a redhead!

On June 24th an historic moment occurred in Australia when for the first time in our history a redhead (and female) Prime Minister was “elected”. The not so honourable Kevin Rudd was evicted from office after he resigned for fear of complete embarrassment in an internal party vote. Due to lack of support in his party and lack of support by the people, others were starting to raise the question of a vote for who should be leader of the labour party. Kevin opted to pull out and quit his role as Prime Minister of Australia. So there you have it – we now have our first female PM. Is this the best thing though?

Julia Gillard has definitely proved herself as a worthy MP over the years and has become much loved by her party, the people and the former PM. It is also the general opinion that she may have the power to be able to maybe take down Tony Abbott in ways Kevin Rudd could not.   One issue though that people and the opposition could consider is that she does not have kids and thus will not be as knowledgeable in areas such as education and parenting issues.

Julia Gillard will have to try and fix what Kevin Rudd messed up and what ultimately was his downfall. One of these issues is the mining tax, which are super taxes against mining companies to be able to pay back debts and give more money to the communities of Australia. This has become quite controversial as Kevin Rudd did not handle it well and huge fights by the mining companies meant that the public opinion sympathetic to mining.

Julia Gillard is going to have to prove herself to voters that she knows that she is doing and will be able to continue with what Labour has promised.  It is very important that she gets re-elected for the next term and continues the run  the Labour party as I think they are a better choice for the people than the Liberals. So far Julia Gillard has been in office a few days and I think we’ll still have to see if she is the best choice as our Prime Minister.

Is this going to be a gender election people? That would be a grave mistake I believe. Issues and policies are the important things here, and not who has the sexiest ankles or the prettiest hair colouring!

It’s not very long ago that the American People voted in their First African American President – on a platform of ‘change’. I would guess that non white Americans were delirious when Barack Obama was sworn in as their 44th President, praying for, pleading for and dreaming of great changes that would be of immense benefit to themselves.
