Marc’s How To Column

21 10 2009

This week I am doing a column on how to search Google easier. This is very helpful when you want to find something very quickly and no one else can help you.

There are a few tips that I can tell you that will help you with searching the web.

  1. Every word that you type will be taken in the search. (There are a few exceptions. E.g. a, the, for)
  2. Searches are case insensitive. If you type something in capitals then it will be just the same as if you typed it normally.
  3. Punctuation is usually ignored, there are some exceptions like $ and -.
  4. Keep things simple! If you are searching for something, type in the name of it, don’t describe the thing in hundreds of words.
  5. Think of how the page will be written. For example: instead of writing ‘my head hurts’ write ‘headache’ which will be more likely to occur.
  6. Choose descriptive words. For example use the words ‘funny ringtones’ instead of ‘funny sounds’. The first option is much more descriptive than the second.
  7. Describe what you need with as few terms possible. If you don’t find what you want then you can see what words you will need to type in to find your needed webpage.

This is a list of some things that will help you when you are searching through Google and trying to find your special site!

Nice post Marc. They are very helpful hints. Have you tried using Google Squared? It’s a great way to search with google.
