New York payed host to the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night and yet again, the live awards show had its moments of controversy. The two-hour awards night is one of the year’s most important musical events, handing out seventeen major awards and featuring musical performances from some of the biggest artists.

This year’s awards were hosted by popular English comedian Russell Brand, who shocked the audience with his sexually-driven comments which were laced with profanities. There was a stellar line-up of musical acts for the evening, including performances from Janet Jackson, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Muse, Pink and Jay-Z. Jackson performed a mash-up of late Michael’s best-known hits, Perry was joined by Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry for a rendition of ‘We Will Rock You’, Lady Gaga gave an eccentric performance of ‘Paparazzi’, Muse performed new single ‘Uprising’ as their American television debut, Pink practically stole the show with a high-flying acrobatic performance of ‘Sober’ – and a host of electrifying performances stunned audiences worldwide.

Beyoncé Knowle’s ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’ was nominated for a staggering nine awards, of which she won three, including the “Video of the Year” – the big award of the night. Green Day’s ‘21 Guns’ was nominated for three awards, winning all of them including “Best Rock Video”, “Best Direction” and “Best Cinematography”. Lady Gaga won “Best New Artist” for ‘Poker Face’, and “Best Special Effects” and “Best Art Direction” for ‘Paparazzi’; Britney Spears won “Best Pop Video” for ‘Womanizer’; Eminem won “Best Hip-Hop Video” for ‘We Made You’ and many others had their stage time receiving numerous awards for the evening.

But it was Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for “Best Female Video” which gained controversy. Swift is a country singer-turned pop icon who scored fame and the number two position on the Billboard charts with her hit single ‘You Belong with Me’. Halfway through her heartfelt acceptance speech for the award, Swift was interrupted by American rap icon Kanye West who took her microphone from her and said “Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time”. The six-thousand person audience booed West off stage. An embarrassed Knowles tried to cover her face as the camera panned in on her, as Swift stood on stage – shocked and nearly in tears, before being ushered off stage.

During her acceptance speech for “Video of the Year” award, Knowles stopped and invited Swift up to complete her acceptance speech. A nervous Swift took the mic and, smiling, said “Can we try this again?” and delivered her speech. She later thanked Knowles for giving her the stage: “I thought that I couldn’t love Beyoncé more and then tonight happened and it was just wonderful.

On his blog later that night, West posted the following statement: “I’M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD’VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!” But he also went on to say that “BEYONCE’S VIDEO WAS THE BEST OF THIS DECADE!!!! … EVERYBODY WANNA BOOOOO ME BUT I’M A FAN OF REAL POP CULTURE!!! NO DISRESPECT BUT WE WATCHIN’ THE SHOW AT THE CRIB RIGHT NOW CAUSE … WELL YOU KNOW!!!! I’M STILL HAPPY FOR TAYLOR!!!!

It has been said that West had consumed too much alcohol at the time of the incident. Fans are calling for him to be banned from future awards shows and are condemning him for his outburst.
