The Riddler

14 09 2009

Hey all you riddlers out there, this edition we have some old classics, courtesies of J.R.R Tolkien and some newbies we know you will love. They are not all easy so have a good think and try your best to solve them without the answers. If you are a fan of The Hobbit then these will be easy for you. Feel free to leave a comment and let us know if you managed to answer.

1.      Thirty white horses on a red hill:

 First they champ;

Then they stamp;

 Then they stand still.

– what are we?

2.      Without breath, cold as death:

 Never thirsty, never drinking;

 All in mail, never clinking.

 – what am I?

3.      What has roots as nobody sees:

 Is taller than trees;

 Up, up it goes, yet never grows?

4.      This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

 5.      It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

 6.      A box without hinges, key or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.

 7.      Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

Ok that’s all for our Hobbit riddles, now for three of my favourites:-

1.      There are two men dead in a cabin in the middle of the woods, they did not die of starvation, disease, cold, sickness or any natural cause – eg, landslide, earthquake etc. They were not killed by any animal or man or each other. How did they die?

*Hint: think of the different types of cabin – answer will be revealed in the next edition!

 2.      Romeo and Juliet are lying dead on the ground. There is glass and water on the floor and the window is open. How did they die?

 3.      Someone went swimming. On the river bank there is a man’s L T-shirt and a pair of women’s shoes. Only one person went swimming. Were they a man or a woman?

That’s all for this edition riddlers, hope you enjoyed solving them. Answers are below HOWEVER the answers for the last three will be posted in the next edition along with some other great riddles to test your willpower. Stay tuned untill next time!

Answers  teeth, fish, mountain, time, darkness, egg, wind
