Another week, another obscure sport, and this time we have a sport that shouldn’t really be called a sport at all!  Yes, the World Beard and Moustache Championship is a real event that is held every two years in various locations around the world. The first competition was held in Höfen-Enz, Germany, in 1990 and the most recent being Anchorage in Alaska.

There are several categories that contestants can enter including moustaches, full beards and partial beards. All of these have smaller sub-categories that contestants can also enter. There are about 18 categories in total.

The competition is mainly hosted by various beard or moustache clubs around the world including the famous First Berliner Beard Club. Germany has dominated the competitions since 2005 taking 14 of the 17 possible first place awards. However, this year Beard Team USA has managed to accomplish its goal of making the USA the world’s greatest power in international facial hair competitions by defeating Germany and winning the title. This is the first time this has ever happened since the creation of the competition. Nearly 300 competitors took part from 15 separate countries. The winners received special engraved Alaska gold pans as prizes.

The next championship is to be held in Trondheim, Norway on the 17th of May 2011.
